Toxic Synovitis

Toxic synovitis is a condition found in children. Children experience hip pain and limping in this condition. It is a form of transient arthritis which affects the hip. It is mostly found in boys when compared to girls. The ratio of toxic synovitis affected boys and a girl is 4:1.

A viral infection is said to be the cause of hip pain in children. The hip joint may get swollen and the hip becomes too painful. Gradually, the one-sided hip pain may affect the other hip by the viral infection.

As the name indicates, the toxic synovitis of the hip is not related to a dangerous or poisonous condition. Mild symptoms are seen in this condition. One side of the hip becomes painful with a mild fever.

Taking anti-inflammatory medicines will help to reduce the pain and discomfort. It is advisable to take necessary medication as per the prescription of a doctor. The child is required to take the medication for 3 to 4 weeks to get rid of the inflammation, pain and swelling.

It is important to give rest to the hip joint while taking medications. This will help in a speedy recovery from toxic synovitis. The child has to be encouraged to walk again after the treatment period.
