Laminectomy is the term which is derived from the term called lumber (lower spine), lamina (part of theĀ bony structure of the spinal canal) and-ectomy means theĀ removal . The removal is done with some operation which is performed in order to relieve the pressure on any one or more spinal nerve roots. The pressure on nerve roots only results in leg or back pain.
The pressure on nerve root is also known as nerve compression. The nerve compression is caused due various reasons like:
- This compression can be due to ruptured disc which is also called protruded or herniated disc.
- It can be due to Spondylosis which is the overuse or deterioration of the multiple discs with degenerative discs and bony spur formation.
- It can be due to scar tissues.
- Any combination of the above mentioned factors can be responsible for the nerve compression.
Process Of Spinal Laminectomy:
The process of Spinal Laminectomy involves the surgery of the patient by laying him on the abdomen or side after giving him anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the lower back to reach the lumber spine. The muscles which are at the back spreads apart and a segment of one or more vertebra is removed to get in the compressed roots.
Once the position where the nerve is pressed is reached; the cause of pressure is removed. This may involve:
- Removal of that portion which is ruptured in the disc.
- Removal of bony overgrowth and bony spurs.
- Removal of the scar tissues.
The duration of this surgery is normally 2 hours. A large bandage is placed on the incision for healing and protection too.
