Pain or agony felt due to stimulation of pain nerve endings behind the knee is called back of the knee pain or behind the knee pain. The following are the causes of the back of the knee pain:
Arthritis or inflammation of the posterior spot of the knee joint can cause this pain. Injury to articular cartilage gives this extreme pain to the knee. Another cause can be Bakers cyst or Popliteal cyst. Bakers cyst is a prominent swelling at the back of the knee often caused by some disorder within the joint.
Inflammation of the hamstring tendons at the back of the joint or tendinopathy can be one of the causes of the pain. Bursitis is a condition where bursa affects the joint is just above the kneecap. This causes pain in people who kneel for work, such as gardeners.
Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT is a blood clot in a vein. It is more common in the calf muscle area, particularly following surgery. Surgery at knee area can lead to DVT and cause back of knee pain. Due to hyperextension or bending the knee back in the wrong way there can be an injury to the posterior cruciate ligament. Overuse of the Popliteus muscle at the back of the knee joint can injure it and cause this extreme pain.
Osgood-Schlatter disease can cause this pain in adolescents. It is due to irritation of the growth plate just at the front of the joint.
Peripheral nerve disorders such as peripheral nerve compression, peripheral nerve trauma or peripheral neuropathy can cause pain in the back of the knee.
Other causes of back of the knee pain are: Cerebrovascular accident, cold, diabetes, fracture, knee injury, meniscal disorders, ligament tears, sciatica and trauma.
There can be other causes as well. You need to consult physician at the right time to get diagnosed and treated.
