Much of life involves learning to cope with challenges and finding out which strategies work for you and which don’t. if you have arthritis, here are some ways you can adapt your surroundings to make your challenges easier to meet:
- To make grasping pen or pencil easier and comfortable, twist a large rubber band around the area where your fingers rest. Or you can remove the plastic center from a foam hair roller and slide pen or pencil into the center of the foam. A ball-point pen is easier and comfortable to use than a felt-tip pen or pencil.
- Taking somebody’s help raise your bed. Now you don’t have to bend over to make it. It is better to use knitted sheet that stretch as this will be helpful in easy bed making.
- For easy and comfortable tucking of bed sheets and blankets you can use wooden pizza paddle.
- It is better to replace your regular telephone with speakerphone so that you don’t get stiff or sore neck and shoulder from cradling the receiver for long duration.
- In case of reading book, place the book on several pillows on your lap so as to raise it to a comfortable height. To turn the book pages you can use rubber fingertips or eraser end of pencil. You can even blow gently along the edges to separate the pages.
- To play card games with aching hands, insert the cards into the side of a closed box. You can also put the bottom of a shoe box into its lid and stand cards in the space between the box and the lid.
- In the kitchen, create a lower work space so you can sit while working. Roll jars and bottles on the counter instead of shaking them. Ask someone to wind rubber band around the lid for convenient opening of jars and bottles.
- If you have trouble gripping your car door handle, especially when it’s cold or wet, glue a piece of rubber to underside of the door handle. Make your steering wheel easier to grip by padding it with a foam cover. And add extra cushioning to the car seat to keep your back, hips and legs more comfortable while driving.
- If you have trouble standing up for a shower, try putting a webbed lawn chair in the shower stall so you can sit while you bathe. For comfortable and easy drying you can put a terry cloth bathrobe. In case you are bathing a baby in sink or bathtub then wear a soft cotton glove on the supporting hand. This will avoid slipping out of child from your grasp.
- When you are getting dressed, put the garment on your weaker limb first. When undressing, take the garment off the stronger limb first. Try knee-high or thigh-high hose to eliminate hassle of putting on pantyhose.
