An article from respected researchers in Berlin showed that cod liver oil helped to relieve pain and suffering in some people with rheumatoid arthritis.

In this study, 43 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis consumed 1 gram of cod liver oil daily for three months. Fifty-two percent had less morning stiffness, 42% experienced lesser pain, and 49 percent had less swelling, Sixty-five percent felt that the cod liver oil helped alleviate their pain, and 98 percent felt that they could take it in spite of its unfavorable odor.

The research team from Dundee University have revealed that taking 10g of cod liver oil either in capsule or liquid forms a day decreased the need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) by 30%.

Scientists have found further evidence that taking cod liver oil could slow down damage caused by arthritis. A small study of tissue taken from knee replacement patients found lower levels of chemicals linked to the disease in those who took pills before surgery.

Professor Bruce Caterson of Cardiff University stressed this was neither a “cure”, nor likely to reverse joint damage already sustained.
