The wrists of our hands consist multiple small joints that help us do all our daily works through our hands. When these joints are affected by arthritis, it becomes difficult to perform daily activities.
Cause of Wrist Arthritis
Usually wrist arthritis is developed in association with other arthritis or problems: The two main causes of wrist arthritis are given below:
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a condition where the bones rub against each other resulting in weakness of the bones, stiffness and pain. Osteoarthritis on the wrist develops due to some kind of trauma or fracture or injury to the ligaments and bones of the wrist.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most common causes of wrist arthritis that destroys the joints, bones and tissues of the wrist.
Symptoms of Wrist Arthritis
- Wrist Arthritis caused by osteoarthritis shows symptoms such as pain, swelling, weakness and limited motion. These symptoms are generally limited to the wrist joint itself.
- Wrist Arthritis caused by rheumatoid arthritis shows symptoms such as pain, tenderness, swelling, decreased grip strength and limited motion. In additions to these symptoms impaired hand function, pain in the knuckle joints, inflammation of the finger joints and carpal tunnel syndrome is seen in this case.
Carpal tunnel syndrome: Carpal tunnel syndrome is irritation of the nerves that surround the joint that results in numbness and tingling of the fingers.
Treatment of Wrist Arthritis
Treatment of wrist arthritis is done on the basis of its cause. Treatment of wrist arthritis caused due to osteoarthritis usually done by conservative methods where surgical method is rarely considered. Treatment of wrist arthritis caused due to rheumatoid arthritis may include surgical methods or other medications.
