Arthritis in the Shoulder Blade
Arthritis spares no joints in the body. One common form of arthritis people suffer from is the “Shoulder Arthritis”. The joints affected in a major way are
Acromioclavicular or AC joint: It is the area where the collarbone (clavicle) meets the tip of the shoulder bone (acromion).
Scapulothoracic joint: Is the joint where the upper arm bone (humerus) meets the shoulder blade (scapula). It is also called the glenohumeral joint or scapulothoracic joint.
Both these joints are the ones that are most vulnerable to arthritis.
Three major types of arthritis that generally affect the shoulder are
Osteoarthritis
It is a degenerative condition that destroys the smooth outer covering (articular cartilage) of the bone.
It usually affects people over 50 years of age and is more common in the acromioclavicular joint than in the glenohumeral shoulder joint.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic inflammatory condition of the joint lining, or synovium.
It can affect people of any age and usually affects multiple joints on both sides of the body.
Posttraumatic Arthritis
Posttraumatic arthritis is a form of osteoarthritis that develops after an injury, such as a fracture or dislocation of the shoulder.
Synvisc for Shoulder Arthritis
Synvisc is a gel-like mixture made up of salt water, hylan A and hylan B that is injected directly into the shoulder joints. It is suggested that synvisc can help in reducing pain of the shoulder osteoarthritis.
If you are facing any kind of problem in any of these areas contact your doctor immediately.
