Arthritis is not just restricted to knees and hips alone, but to every possible joint including the hands.

Well, how does one know if he/she is suffering from hand arthritis?

Here is a list of symptoms, which will help one, identify if one is suffering from hand arthritis or not.

Dull or a burning sensation in the hand: This happens when there is overuse of joint especially due to grasping and gripping. As the cartilage wears away, this burning sensation will occur with less use of joint also. In advanced disease, the joint pain may wake you up at night. Even mundane activities will become very painful.

Rainy Weather: Many people with arthritis complain of increased joint pain with rainy weather. This is a very important indicator.

Swelling: When the affected joint is subject to greater stress than it can bear, it may swell in an attempt prevent further joint use. Swelling, is another indicator of joint arthritis.

Changes in Surrounding Joints: In patients with advanced thumb base arthritis, the neighboring joints may become more mobile than normal. If you notice something like this, be alert and consult the doctor.

Warmth :The arthritic joint may feel warm to touch. This is due to the body’s inflammatory response.

Crepitation and Looseness: Damagede cartilages may cause a sensation of grating or grinding in the affected joint (crepitation). This causes loosening of joints. In advanced cases, the joint may appear larger than normal (hypertrophic). This is usually due to a combination of bone changes, loss of cartilage, and joint swelling.

Cysts:When arthritis affects the end joints of the fingers (DIP joints), small cysts (mucous cysts) may develop. These cysts may further cause ridging or dents in the nail plate of the affected finger.

All these points should be kept in mind and if you happen to suffer from these symptoms contact the doctor immediately.
