According to the claim of research team of Manchester University, U.K genetics of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) has been found. Rheumatoid Arthritis which is an inflammatory disease mainly affecting the joints of the body is caused by a genetic variant.
The research findings were published in the journal Natural Genetics. This finding will help scientists in better understanding of the various genetic risk factors for Rheumatoid Arthritis.
The research team of Manchester University studied the nine genetic variants that were earlier found to hold DNA variants that determine susceptibility to RA. In U.K around 387,000 people are found to be affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis. The research shows that RA-linked genetic variant is located on chromosome 6.
According to the Professor Jane Worthington of the Arthritis Research Campaign of Manchester University the variant discovered is not present on the gene. The variant might manipulate the activities of the nearby gene known as TNFAIP3. The TNFAIP3 gene is said to be active in the inflammatory processes.
Clinician of the team Dr.Anne Barton said that “We believe the genetic marker we have found may determine who develops RA or how severe the disease becomes.” Now the research is on the way to understand how the variation of chromosome 6 is involved in the development of RA and its reaction to the various treatments.
