No specific cure has been found till date for Psoriatic Arthritis. All treatments for this arthritis are mainly to reduce pain and stiffness. Therefore the treatment plan usually is comprised of medication, physiotherapy and daily-living adjustments.
Few Aspects that could help you deal with Psoriatic Arthritis:
Skin Care:
- Consult a dermatologist for scales that develop on your skin because of Psoriatic Arthritis.
- Use humidifier at home during winter to prevent your skin from becoming too dry.
- Use of topical creams, body lotions and moisturizers help keep your skin from getting dry. Consider using lanolin cream, light mineral oil, petroleum jelly, cocoa butter lotion or baby oil.
- Moderate exposure to sunlight slows down cell growth. But be careful not to over expose yourself to sun as it can damage your skin.
- Psoralen plus long-wave ultraviolet A light (PUVA) therapy is the usual treatment for psoriasis.
Exercise:
The lesser you use your sore joint, the more stiff your joints will be. Exercise reduces pain and stiffness of Psoriatic Arthritis. But do not over exert yourself with exercises. Consult your physician before you chose an exercise for this arthritis.
Thermal Therapy for Psoriatic Arthritis:
A hot shower might help reduce your pain. Heat helps relax aching muscles and soreness. Similarly using ice packs on the area that is sore will also help reduce pain.
Be very careful with your body if you are affected with Psoriatic Arthritis. Make sure you use all your body parts and joints in your daily activities. But be careful not to over-exert them. For instance, do not restrict yourself from going to work but use a splint that will help decrease pain, swelling and stiffness. A splint holds the joint in a comfortable position. You can use a splint at night also.
If your joints are damaged badly then a surgery might help you. Surgery replaces a natural joint by a man-made one. But make sure every step for the betterment of your condition is in consultation with your doctor.
